    TENA in practice

A case study of our incontinence products and services was carried out at four nursing homes. [2] The results show how residents, caregivers and the budget were affected when choosing TENA as their partner. The study showed that the holistic concept had a significant positive effect on not only the well-being of the residents, but also on the work environment.

Our holistic and integrated approach evaluated:

    • The well-being of residents
    • Staff competence and job satisfaction
    • Resources spent on managing continence care

Essity’s holistic concept consists of TENA incontinence products and TENA Services. This includes staff training, the use of the products and optimization of work routines and structures. In other words, the study analyzed a Product-Service-System (PSS), where pad products are offered and used in the context of a series of related services.

    Participants

The study in Copenhagen involved four wards at four different nursing homes. All tests and measurements were made before and after the intervention. The study started in June 2008 and was completed in February 2009. In addition to caregivers and heads of the four wards, 32 residents also participated in the survey. All residents received help to handle incontinence.

    What was studied?

The study was designed as an intervention study with tests being made before and after the intervention. The intervention consisted of introducing Essity’s holistic concept, TENA hygiene products and TENA Services. The results of the study were based on Essity being a sole supplier of both products and services during the intervention.

    Methods used

The results were studied using interviews with residents, caregivers and heads of wards, as well as diaries registering the frequency of each pad change for seven days and nights, before and after the introduction of TENA products.

    Resident well-being

    • Residents who were very satisfied with their incontinence protection increased from 46% to 55%

    • Residents who said their incontinence protection was comfortable increased from 39% to 69%

    • Residents who found that they were successfully helped to manage their incontinence increased from 39% to 69%

    Working atmosphere

    • Easier changing of protective products resulted in an increase of free time by 33%

    • Staff found TENA Flex easier to change and felt it improved their working posture. Pad changing that previously required two caregivers could now be managed by one

    • Fewer leakages also meant that the amount of laundry was reduced

    The environmental impact

    • Consumption of incontinence protection was reduced by 20%

    Conclusions

Overall, it was found that TENA’s holistic and integrated approach to continence care improved:

    • The well-being and quality of life of residents
    • Staff motivation, competence and job satisfaction
    • Cost savings on time spent changing pads and bedding, laundry, cleansing, and skincare regimens

     Furthermore, the study found that:

    • Incontinence pads are only part of overall best-practice for continence care
    • Individualized continence care can reduce cost

    • There is room for improvement in staff knowledge and competence, optimizing continence care, and economy
